Lafayette School District Volunteer Requirements
Many of these requirements take several weeks to complete so please start NOW!

Do you want to volunteer at school?
Drive on a field trip?

For the 2026-2027 school year, the District will again use "Be A Mentor," an online portal to streamline volunteer screening. ALL VOLUNTEER ROLES at BVE will require TB Screening Clearance and Live Scan Fingerprinting.

NEW REQUIREMENT THIS YEAR: MANDATED REPORTER TRAINING FOR FIELD TRIP DRIVER VOLUNTEERS!

Starting July 1, volunteers who serve as field trip drivers will be required to complete Mandated Reporter Training before they may volunteer in that role. This requirement is due to the new California law (SB 848) and applies ONLY to field trip drivers. The online training course will take between 1.5 - 2 hours and must be completed prior to driving on a field trip. If you were an eligible field trip driver last year, you should have received an email from Be A Mentor on June 30, 2026 with instructions on how to complete the new requirement. If you're a new volunteer, please see instructions below to start the clearance process.

Step 1: Create A 'Be A Mentor' Account

All volunteers must register on the 'Be A Mentor' online portal. This system will streamline the registration process for parents and caregivers, making it easier for them to serve in all volunteer capacities.

Step 2: Complete the Clearance Process via the Be A Mentor Portal

  1. State-Issued Driver’s License or State Identification

  2. Tuberculosis (TB) Clearance:

    1. Proof of TB clearance within the last four years is required.

    2. If you need TB clearance, consult your medical provider or find community testing options. Or access the website https://www.cchealth.org/health-insurance/my-contra-costa-health-plan/provider-directory

    3. More information on TB testing is available from Contra Costa Health Services.

  3. Live Scan Fingerprinting:

    1. Use a provider of your choice. Local providers can be found here or on the website: https://oag.ca.gov/fingerprints/locations

    2. Once you create your Be A Mentor account a Live Scan form will be emailed to you so you can take it to your local provider.

    3. Background clearance will include reports from the Department of Justice and the FBI, as well as a sex offender registry search.

  4. New and Existing Volunteer Drivers (Updated for 2026-2027 school year)

    • If you plan to transport students for field trips or school-sponsored events in your personal vehicle, you must meet specific Volunteer Driver Requirements before being approved.

These include, but are not limited to:

      • Be at least 25 years old

      • Valid driver’s license, held for at least 3 years

      • Proof of insurance with minimum coverage

      • Vehicle in excellent condition with seatbelts for all

      • No phone use, smoking/vaping, or personal errands while driving

    • Important: Your personal insurance will serve as the primary coverage in the event of any accident or injury while transporting students. All volunteer drivers must meet the requirements annually, register through Be A Mentor, and upload insurance documentation before transporting students. Review the Parent/Guardian Volunteer Driver Reference Guide for more details.
