Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
We are committed to the well-being of our students, staff, and families to create a safe and healthy learning environment.
Meet the Counselor
My name is Stephanie Haren (Ms. Stephanie) and I am grateful to be returning for my third year as the Counselor for Burton Valley Elementary. I was born in NYC, and grew up in Southern California. Since then I have lived in Oakland, Berkeley, NY and San Francisco. I now happily call Lafayette my home, where I live with my kids, Mateo & Paloma, and our dog, Oso. I love running, art, yoga and traveling. I have a passion for all things wellness, mental health and education. Each day I am energized by the children of BVE!
Education & Experience
I graduated from UC Berkeley with my BA in Psychology and Ethnic Studies. I later studied at Bank Street College of Education, earning an MS in Early Childhood Special Education and at Columbia University where I completed a Master’s degree in Social Work. I have been working with children, families, and teachers since 1996 and have worked in roles from classroom teacher, non-profit program director, mental health consultant, to teaching yoga to kids with special needs!
Philosophy
As a school counselor I take a holistic, systematic, proactive and reflective approach. I believe social emotional health is a foundation to all types of learning. I strive to make a welcoming environment, where every child feels safe, seen, heard and accepted.
