PTA General Meeting - The Umbrella Committee

Description

From EmbraceRace: Microaggressions are the "everyday slights, indignities and insults committed against marginalized groups because of their membership to those groups." (Professor Derald Sue). Microaggressions are hard to talk about, on one hand, because when we commit them we generally don't intend and are not aware of the hurt we've caused. On the other hand, the victims of microaggressions might hesitate to speak up for fear of being seen as "overly sensitive" or otherwise assuming the risks often associated with advocating for oneself.

Join your child in making Burton Valley Elementary a more inclusive place! After a successful DEIB Parent Workshop on Microaggressions in December, the amazing UMBRELLA (Understanding, Mentoring, Belonging, and Racial Equity through Listening, Learning and Advocacy) Committee returns Wednesday, Jan 31 to facilitate a family workshop on microaggressions. The workshop will take place from 6:15pm - 7:00pm, immediately after the PTA meeting, in the BVE Faculty Lounge.

Support your child in this engaging, interactive workshop as they learn

  • How to identify a microaggression

  • The difference between a microaggression & bullying

  • The difference between intent and impact, and

  • How to react to a microaggression as an ally
